A Short Story: Seeding Life In a New Way
In a different time, in a different world was the realm of seeds. This was a very different place than what we are used to. For instance, in this land you weren’t raised by parents; you were raised as a colony by a select few elders specifically chosen to teach the new seeds about their history, and even more importantly, their destiny. In this colony the best parents didn’t give you the most, they produced the most. Even more different than what we’re used to is you didn’t need a second seed to reproduce. You just needed you and a good place to grow. And that was the ultimate goal of every seed; to find a place to grow in order to produce the most new seeds like a good parent is supposed to do. Every night before bed, the elders of Seedville would share stories of how some seeds would produce incredible amounts of offspring. Sometimes they would contrast these stories with those who didn’t produce anything since they picked bad spots to grow because it was easier.
One seed in particular paid extra close attention, Jerry the seed Jr. Number 229; let’s call him Jerry. Jerry looked forward to the day that he would be ready to follow his seed destiny of reproducing. He wanted to be one of those who lived his life to the fullest and didn’t settle. He wanted to live the most abundant life possible. One of Jerry’s favourite stories was about his dad who left a letter saying: “Don’t fall for the easy life; there is a better way.” Jerry wasn’t alone in his love of this line. His many brothers and sisters also loved this line. His father had produced a lot of seedlings. His father was one of the best. Jerry wanted to be like his father. So did his friends… in fact, all of the seeds talked about Jerry’s dad and his motto: “Don’t fall for the easy life; there is a better way.” The problem was the seeds didn’t know what this really meant.
Finally the day came when the seeds would be released into the world to find a place to reproduce. The gate opened and in shone this beautiful light. It was better than the young seeds had imagined. Quickly they rushed into the light to see what this new world was like. It was huge. It seemed to carry on forever. Jerry and his family and friends were told what to look for when choosing the best spot for reproducing. The first land the seeds came to was all stone, so all of the seeds pushed on since stone was terrible for reproducing. Fortunately the further they walked, the less stone there seemed to be. The seeds excitement for this new world, however, was soon replaced by exhaustion and fear. What if there is nothing else? What if there isn’t a better way? Eventually, under the heat of the sun, Jerry’s family and friends began to say, “This is good enough. I’m too tired to go any further.” But Jerry would yell, “Remember what we were taught: don’t fall for the easy life; there is a better way.” For the first part of the journey this inspired the seeds to keep going, but one by one they began saying: how do we know there is a better way? How can we trust our ancestors? This is good enough for me.
Jerry would try pushing them and carrying them, but they refused to move, so he would sadly say good-bye and he would carry on. Eventually, when there was about half the original group left, they came upon a new field. It looked beautiful. There was lots of space and lots of sun. It was far better than what they had previously seen. Most of the seeds quickly dug in and got ready to reproduce, but a few of the nerdier seeds like Jerry tested the soil and it was lacking in nutrients. They quickly announced this to the group, but no one else seemed to care. They were settled in and nothing Jerry or the few others could do to change their minds. In fact, the seeds who settled in began to try to convince the nerdy seeds to join them: why do you want to keep going? Will it really make a difference? This is good enough. How do you know there is a better way? The seeds were pretty convincing; a few of the nerdy seeds remained while a small group carried on… and on… and on… this field seemed to go on forever. The trip was brutal. Even most of the nerdy seeds gave up and settled. Soon there were only two seeds left, Jerry and his friend Jennifer. Jerry, despite all of his enthusiasm, was also now tired of this journey. He looked to the horizon and it didn’t seem to change. It was all just average soil. Any of his original hope was now gone. “I give up,” said Jerry. But Jennifer yelled at him: “You can’t give up now.”
“Yes I can,” Jerry retorted.
“No you can’t.”
“Yes, I can.”
“No, you can’t.”
“Why?” asked Jerry.
Jennifer looked Jerry straight in the eye and said, “Because you can’t.”
Jerry responded, “That’s the worst argument ever,”
But Jennifer retorted, “Jerry, you’ve been waiting for this all of your life and you’re giving up.” “What if this is all there is? How do you know?”
“I just do.”
“Because people told you?”
“I don’t know, so yes, I… I… I guess so, but don’t you want to push a little further just to see what’s out there?”
“It’s too hard.”
“Jerry, you’ve come this far. You can do it.”
“I don’t know.”
No matter what Jennifer said, she couldn’t convince him to keep going so she flashed him… whatever that means for seeds… and that helped Jerry get up and get moving.
Jennifer said, “I don’t think i can keep going.”
“You have to.”
“I want to, but i can’t. My ankle”
“Fine.” Then, with great strength Jerry lifted her over his head and said, “I’ll carry you.” And carry her Jerry did. Jerry carried her over hills, through valleys, and over thistles until… until they saw it… Jerry threw Jennifer down and ran to the dirt and tested it. It was perfect. This dirt had the right amount of nutrients. They had done it. They hadn’t settled for the easy life; they had pushed on. To Jerry’s surprise, Jennifer came running to him.
“I thought you had hurt your ankle,” Jerry inquired.
“Actually, I just didn’t want to walk anymore. Thanks for carrying me.”
Suddenly without warning Jerry started to make out with Jennifer as she yelled, “We don’t need each other to reproduce.”
“Yeah, but it’s more fun this way.”
Eventually Jennifer was able to get Jerry to properly plant himself in the group. As time passed because they had found the true soil, Jennifer and Jerry grew much larger and produced many more seeds than any of the others who had settled for less. Jerry and Jennifer didn’t settle for the easy life. Instead, they found the truth. They found the nutrients they were looking for and it was the nutrients that made all the difference.
