Accepting our Differences

I was recently out with a friend, and in the background of the one store we were in, I heard a song I hadn’t heard before.  After a few moments I asked the person with me: “Do you know who this is?”  She replied: “Yes,” and then looked at me in the condescending manner women are so good at; guys know what I’m talking about.  This stare continued… and continued.  It was as if she was wondering if I could top this stupid question with an even stupider one.  It was almost as if she was hoping I could top it with an even stupider one.  Fortunately, for her, I did.  Not trying to be funny I asked: “Who is it because it’s really catchy?”  She then started to laugh in the condescending manner women are so good at; guys know what I’m talking about.  I love making people laugh, but I prefer when the laughter is after I’m trying to be funny.  In between snorts she asked me: “You’re joking, right?”  Alas, I was not, and unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to lie and salvage any dignity I once had; guys know what I’m talking about… at least the dorky ones know what I’m talking about.  Thus, in a very clear and audible voice for the whole store to hear, she said: “It’s One Direction.  You like One Direction!”  Now, based on this reaction I knew I should be embarrassed by it, but… I wasn’t, and not because I’m cool but because who was One Direction?  I quickly learned they are a modern day boy band.  So yes, I should be embarrassed for liking this song, but… I still wasn’t because they’re actually very popular.  If anything, I felt relieved: “Wow, I’m… normal.”  I don’t get to say this very often.  Sure, I’m normal for a fourteen year old girl, but it’s nice to be normal once in awhile.

Please know, I would never buy their album.  I’m too manly for that… I borrowed it from the library.  Thanks to the self-checkout, no one even knows I borrowed it… well, no one knew until now.  Consider this the reward for reading my blog; you get to hear one of my secrets.  Overall, it’s not the best album to which I’ve ever listened.  For instance, the Backstreet Boys Millennium album is far better… I mean the… uh… I have nothing.  There hasn’t been a good rock album for awhile now.

One song on this album in particular stood out for me.  The lyrics are: “I wanna stay up all night/ And jump around until we see the sun/ I wanna stay up all night/ And find a girl and tell her she’s the one.”  First off, if I were to write this chorus it would be “I wanna stay up… for a couple hours/ And jump in bed until I see the sun.”  It’s only a few minor changes, but it makes a big difference for the song’s message.  “I wanna good night’s sleep/ Cuz otherwise tomorrow I will be done.”  Maybe it’s my age, but the idea of staying up all night is not appealing at all, at all.  But even when I was young I didn’t get excited about staying up all night; I love sleep.  I don’t think you’ll find factory workers on night shift singing: “I wanna stay up all night/ And work around until we see the sun.”  Staying up all night is a chore.  It goes against our body’s desire to refresh itself, so we have to fight to stay awake with either willpower or unhealthy, artificial means.  For some reason music has glorified this type of unhealthy living.  “I wanna stay up all night.”  Why?  Being tired sucks.  Staying up all night will mean being tired the next day.  I could understand a song like: “I get to sleep in/ Yeah, I’m going to sleep in past 8am,” because that’s exciting to me.  Unfortunately, our culture has this underlying message of “live for the moment and ignore the future,” and people are falling prey to this.  Households are accumulating massive debt, obesity is at an all time high, patience is at an all time low, anxiety is rampant, and a sense of self-worth is rare.  I’m not saying One Direction is to blame because they are simply following the cultural norm.  Unfortunately, we need to start saying No to what’s “normal” behaviour when it’s not healthy.

I know it’s not normal for me, a grown man, to admit he likes a song by a group like One Direction.  The problem with some of these major hits, however, is you have to purposefully say: “No, I will not like it in order to look cool,” because the songs are catchy.  We deny our natural urge to tap our foot out of fear of judgement.  It’s like Nickelback.  I hate Nickelback, but it’s not because the music isn’t catchy; it often is.  The problem is I know the song is going to be so overplayed I will soon hate it with all my soul.  Even if I think the song is catchy I will say I hate the song because it’s by Nickleback, and you’re expected to publicly hate their music.  Ultimately, it seems like we’re afraid to admit we like something since there’s a chance we’ll get made fun of for it.  It’s time we accept ourselves, and what we like (please note: if it’s something dangerous like alcoholism or illegal like pedophilia, you should seek help).  We need to embrace our differences because it’s in our differences that we learn to laugh and experience new aspects of life.  The problem is when we let differences be a source of fear because this leads to bullying, racism and divorce.  Thus, we need to accept our differences; we’re not all meant to follow one direction… yes, that was a pun… but we’re allowed to appreciate music by bands like One Direction even if we’re not 14 year old girls.  It’s time we put aside our fears, and connect with people in both our similarities and differences.
